Understanding In-Home Care and What Choices are Available

Home Care in Palatine, IL

Home Care in Palatine ILWhen faced with the decision of how to care for the aging parent in your life, it can be a confusing and overwhelming experience in deciding what elderly care is needed if you don’t understand what options are available.

Why In-Home Care Vs. a Facility?

Providing in-home care to your aging parent allows them to still have their independence and remain in the comfort of their own home and surroundings. It also allows for any pets that they may have to remain with them, which for many, is a source of needed love and companionship.  It also allows you to have the peace of mind that your parent is being well taken care of and their health monitored providing care that you may not be able to or just being with them in times you cannot.

What Kind of Help Does Your Loved One Need?

There are many types of in home care services that you can provide to your parent.  Depending on the health of your parent, you may need to combine services in order to get the best care possible.

A Home Care Nurse is one that provides medical care to anyone who is home bound.  A home care nurse is a RN or LPN that provides medical care and medication assistance.  Keep in mind that a home care nurse will not provide daily services like a Home Care Provider will, described below.

A Home Care Provider is one that can provide daily services such as bathing, running errands, doing chores around the home, meal assistance as well as companionship.  A home care provider does not provide medical care.

Live-In Home Care is when the hired caregiver lives in the home with your parent as long as there is a separate bedroom.  Meals are usually provided for the caregiver as if she was another member of the family.  Again, a live-in caregiver will not provide medical assistance either.

What Questions to Ask When Choosing a Home Care Agency

When choosing an agency to provide the in-home services, they should come to your parent’s home for the initial visit so that they can meet your parent(s) and see the home. Having a list of questions is essential during this visit.  Here are a few you can ask:

  • Is overnight service provided?
  • How many hours a day?
  • How many days a week?
  • Is it just one caregiver that will come continuously?
  • Will the caregiver provide medical care if needed?
  • What if the caregiver and my parent do not like one another?

This is the time that you want to introduce yourself as being an active family member and let the agency and caregiver know what role you will play in making decisions with or for your parent.  Having a good understanding of what services are provided up front will allow for a smooth entrance of the caregiver into your family’s life.
